Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park,
University of Miami Miller School of Medicine students are hosting the 11TH Annual SunSmart 5K to celebrate heart & skin health! University of Miami dermatologists will be at the race to give Free Post-Race Skin Cancer Screenings within private booths.
Bring your family and friends, race for great causes, and start the day having improved your own heart and skin health!
The health and safety of our participants and volunteers is our highest priority, which is why the 11th Annual SunSmart 5K remains postponed.
As mentioned in our 3/7 update, we would like to provide you with a new update:
- The official University of Miami policy currently prohibits events with greater than 50 people in attendance. We will to continue to operate in line with these policies.
- We would like to emphasize that the event has been postponed NOT canceled. Necessary event expenses were paid, and other preparations made, in advance, so we have no intentions of canceling the race. Once the University deems it appropriate, we are prepared to host the race.
- If you have already registered, your registration will automatically carry over to the future event date. If you are concerned about your ability to attend on the future event date, you may be able transfer your registration to another participant. We will provide more details about this process once a new date has been selected.
Thank you for your continued understanding and support as we navigate this difficult situation and do everything within our means to resolve this challenge. As you know, the SunSmart 5K is a completely non-profit event with proceeds and donations devoted to skin cancer research.
For the latest information and advisories from the University of Miami, please stay tuned to official University communications at https://news.miami.edu/stories/2020/02/coronavirus.html.
Sunsmart 5k is postponed indefinitely.
The SunSmart team has been closely monitoring coronavirus developments in South Florida as this unprecedented situation continues to evolve. It is with heavy hearts that we received report of the first cases of, and deaths from, COVID-19 in South Florida, as announced last night by the Florida Department of Health.
The highest priority of the SunSmart team is the health and safety of our participants and volunteers. Having carefully consulted expert opinions at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and weighed the risks posed to participants, we have made the difficult decision to postpone our race date and dermatology screenings.
We have not taken this decision lightly, and understand the frustration from having plans changed with such short notice. Unfortunately, it became clear this morning that we were unable to ensure the well-being of those attending the event.
Participants will be contacted by email next week with further updates regarding a future race date. Additionally, you may contact us directly at email@example.com with any concerns.
We would like to emphasize how sincerely we thank you for your support and patience as we proceed in this difficult situation.
